Previously wedding
cakes were more of a bread than a cake. There was a time when
breaking bread over the bride’s head symbolized breaking her
virgin state and giving the groom dominance over her.
In past times a couple
would lean over a pile of stacked buns to kiss. If successful they
would be blessed with many children.
Wedding cakes were once
white and made with very expensive refined sugar. It was thought
that the whiter the cake icing the more affluent the family.
White icing has also
been thought of as a sign of purity. Today more contemporary
brides often choose to have their gown and their cake match with
many different colors being acceptable.
The cake cutting
ceremony has been popular for many years and is the first bride
and groom task that is accomplished after becoming husband and
wife. Giving each other bites of wedding cake are symbolic of
providing for each other.
Having a groom’s cake
was once quite popular. The cake was usually chocolate in flavor.
It was once believed to have been served by the groom to the
bridesmaids. Another tradition allowed the groom to save the cake
for sharing with the groomsmen after the honeymoon.
Most couples today
choose to save the top of the wedding cake. It is reserved for the
1st anniversary. The cake serves as a pleasant reminder of their
special wedding day and their commitment to one another. |
